What is the primary purpose of the drip chamber in an IV setup?

To prevent air from entering the IV line

The drip chamber is placed to trap air bubbles and keep air from entering the IV line, protecting the patient from an air embolism. As fluid drips through, any tiny bubbles rise to the top of the chamber and stay there rather than moving downstream. This setup also lets you visually gauge flow by counting drops, but the actual rate is controlled by the clamp or an infusion pump, not by the chamber itself. The chamber isn’t intended to filter bacteria or heat the solution, and those functions are handled by other parts of the IV system or equipment.
